The Online Threat Parents Miss: How Extremists Groom Our Kids
A parent’s guide to identifying online radicalization, recognizing subtle red flags, and keeping kids safe
Most parents assume online hate or political extremism will show up in obvious ways—loud slogans, violent images, or clear hate symbols. But today’s worst digital threats start much more quietly, often disguised as memes, games, and casual “friendships” that slowly pull kids into harmful behavior.
I loved this conversation with Dr. Amy Cooter, deputy director and co-founder of the Institute for Countering Digital Extremism, because it is a prime example of trying to arm you with action steps, rather than wallowing in despair.
In this video, she explains what nihilistic violent extremism is, how it shows up online, the warning signs parents might spot, and what you can do to keep the conversation open before a problem snowballs.
